Crazy Trick to Fix Your Chipping Yips + Two Pebble-Quality Monterey Courses for 1/10 the price!
Plus, Greenside Scrambling: the Pros vs. Joes Disparity
Happy Tuesday all! With Christmas right around the corner, the golf world got a Christmas gift a few days early - Tiger is back in action once again! All is right in the golf world. Despite having his hoodie tucked into his pants, his swing looked great as he provided a preview into his new golf league, titled TGL or “Tomorrow’s Golf League”, a new league that pits Tour Pros against each other in team-based competitions – hmmm sounds familiar… *cough cough, LIV GOLF.
Well, not quite. TGL will be played in a virtual stadium on GIANT simulator screens, and each match will be a 15-hole, 3-on-3 match involving two teams. As the founder of the league, Tiger gave us a sneak peek into what the stadium will look like, and let’s put it this way – if any golfer had a dream about an indoor facility to play golf in, this is exactly what it would look like. Pumped to see the final product!

TIPS & DRILLS
Fix Your Chipping Yips with this Crazy Trick
The CEO of Golf drops another gem
To Recap…
Most golfers….scratch that, ALL golfers, have gone through the chipping “yips” at one point in their golf journey. The “yips” live in a dark, dark place that can sometimes seem impossible to escape, that is, until you find that one lifesaving tip. Well, look no further – we have the cure! In the video above, the CEO of Golf gives you back your confidence:
-STEP 1: Grip the club so that your lead hand pinky finger is hanging off the butt end of the club. This allows the weight of the clubhead to be exaggerated and increases the feel of the club through impact.
-STEP 2: When swinging through the ball, don’t be afraid to smack the club into the ground. Wedges are made with bounce, which allows the club to glide through the grass without digging in and getting stuck. Simply swing through the impact zone and allow the club to release.
-STEP 3: Keep it simple and swing with confidence! Using the bounce makes the shot more forgiving and can widen your margin for error quite a bit.
PRO TIP: If this drill isn’t working, try the TOE TAP TECHNIQUE (or of course, you could always just hit more greens)!
COURSES
Pebble Beach Quality in Monterey, but at 1/10 the Price
And a two course, 36-hole special that stretches your dollar even further
Bayonet Black Horse
Seaside, CA
The Monterey peninsula is widely known for incredible courses like Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill & Cypress Point. And the 2nd thing it’s known for is the price tag associated with each. But if you’re looking for equally high quality golf in the area at a fraction of the price, we’ve found your answer. Bayonet Black Horse has an interesting backstory and boasts a rich military heritage that sets it apart from its more famous Monterey neighbors.
Originally part of Fort Ord, the Bayonet course was born in 1954, designed by Major General Robert B. McClure (seen in the image above) to aid military morale and named after the 7th Infantry "Light Fighter" Division. After the success of the Bayonet course, the Black Horse course followed in 1964, honoring the 11th Cavalry Regiment. The most infamous stretch of Bayonet, holes 11-15 known as "Combat Corner," features a series of sharp doglegs that was allegedly (and hilariously) crafted to accommodate the General's notorious slice. The challenging stretch of holes is best summed up by this review: "I have a buddy that played on the Golden State tour for a couple of years, then the PGA tour. He always told me that Combat Corner was tougher than Amen Corner!"
After Fort Ord was officially shut down, the City of Seaside purchased the courses in 1997, finally opening them to the public. A $13 million renovation in 2008 elevated both layouts to championship status, culminating in hosting the PGA Professional National Championship in 2012 and 2018. While Pebble Beach may boast more waterfront holes, Bayonet Black Horse provides a stern test of golf that has earned it the nickname "Bethpage Black of the West Coast". The Bayonet course, in particular, is renowned for its difficulty, ranking as the 35th toughest course in America by Golf Digest in 2009.
For those seeking value without compromising on quality, Bayonet Black Horse's ‘36-hole special’ allows you to play both courses for just $260, nearly a 40% cost savings. So don’t shy away from Monterey simply because you don’t think it offers any bang for your buck.
Rates: $260 to play both courses with the course’s “36-hole special”

STATISTICS
Stat of the Day: Bogey Avoidance - Greenside Scrambling: Pros vs. Joes
presented by…
The Stat: According to ShotLink PGA Tour data, the 2024 season leader in greenside scrambling (i.e. up & down conversion rate from off the green) was Xander Schauffele, who missed 427 greens in regulation on the season and made par or better 302 times. That’s a 70.7% up-and-down rate. For comparison, the average on tour was 58.8% and the average amateur comes in at just 29.2%.
The Takeaway: Next time you get upset about not chipping every ball to tap-in range, just remember that the guys on tour fail to get up and down 41.2% of the time. Chipping improvement isn’t about hitting every shot perfectly; it is more about eliminating the chunks and the skulls!
Naturally, the higher the handicap, the less often a player will get up and down. If you want to start shooting lower scores, focus your practice time honing your touch around the greens across a variety of lies and distances.
