Bryson's Secret to Increasing Driver Speed + Take a 2.5 Hour Ferry + Car Trip to a Public Course?

Plus, Drives of 275+ Yards By Handicap

Happy Tuesday all- it’s time for some Olympics golf! The action starts Thursday for the USA Men’s team, represented by Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa and Wyndham Clark. The Women’s team starts tomorrow and is comprised of Nelly Korda, Lilia Vu and Rose Zhang.

Spoiler alert, you’re probably not going to love the Team USA uniforms from the J. Lindeberg brand. And that’s exactly the point- they’re designed to stand out and get people talking. Scott Davis, the CEO of J Lindeberg North America, is on record as stating, “If no one’s talking about you, that’s a lot worse. Right?” … ummm, sure why not? Let’s go with that.

TIPS & DRILLS
Bryson’s Secret to Unleashing Driver Speed
More Force = More Distance
To Recap…

Bryson continues to transform his image via social media into “the people’s golfer.” And is there anything the people desire more than longer drives off the tee? In today’s video, Bryson shares his secret to increasing driver club head speed, which of course yields longer drives:

-STEP 1: First, load the club in your backswing by raising your hands (with nice full width in the arms). In doing so, you should feel like your weight is coming off the ground. Bryson calls this “unweighing” yourself.
-STEP 2: When your hands get to about shoulder height, start to apply resistance in the opposite direction and force your weight back down into your lead side. Don’t try to get a good wrist hinge at the top of your swing to create power. As Bryson mentions, this can actually slow your swing speed (since many will end up casting the club and losing the torque created by a nice full body turn).
-STEP 3: When the club gets to about parallel to the ground in your downswing, start to push up and off the ground and release the club head. If you can follow all 3 steps, you’ll certainly create more speed with your club head.

PRO TIP: All of the above is irrelevant if you can’t keep the ball in play. 260 yards down the middle beats a 300 yard drive lost in the woods every day of the week. So be sure to play within yourself, maintaining balance and club face control throughout your swing.

A Public Course That’s Worth the 2.5 Hour Journey
The Next Time You’re Visiting the Cape, Take the Ferry to Nantucket

Miacomet Golf Course
Nantucket, MA

How much travel pain are you willing to endure to play a public golf course? Would you take a 2 hour and 15 minute ferry to a remote island, followed by a 15 minute car ride? Just about everyone who has had the chance to play Miacomet Golf Course on Nantucket would say it’s 100% worth the trip.

Miacomet opened in 1963 as a 9-hole course, and it was expanded to an 18-hole track 40 years later in 2003. Anyone who knows Nantucket understands it’s largely a summer playground for the wealthy. There aren’t too many full-time residents, so the pressure to go private is certainly enticing. Sankaty Head and Nantucket Golf Club are acclaimed nearby private clubs, and yet, many of their members still come over to Miacomet. “We could sell out to the wealthy if we wanted to,” says Alan Costa, the president of the company that operates Miacomet (NGM). “We could jack up rates ridiculously high… but we don’t,” he says, because they want to give “everybody an opportunity to play.” Discounted rates are offered to locals, and the tee sheet is split between residents and vacationers.

As far as the course goes, the sandy island terrain is wide, windy, and fescue-lined. “If you were blindfolded, taken to Miacomet and told you were in Scotland, you might readily believe it,” one reviewer wrote. The greens are among the best-maintained anywhere in the U.S., an exceptional feat considering the course only gets consistent temperatures above 60 degrees for 4 months a year. The #8 course in Massachusetts in 2023 according to Golf Advisor, don’t miss Miacomet the next time you find yourself in or around the Cape, even if it means enduring some travel pain. If you don’t mind paying a bit more, there’s a high speed ferry that cuts the water time in half if you’re so inclined.

Rates: $245 during peak season ($100 for residents), $70 during the off-season

STATISTICS
Stat of the Day: Drives over 275 Yards By Handicap
presented by…

The Stat: A scratch golfer only hits the ball over 275 yards 18% of the time according to Golf Monthly, while a 20 Handicap will only accomplish this feat 2% of the time.

The Takeaway: This is a simple one- You DON’T need to hit the long ball to play great golf! Of course, it makes sense that, on average, lower handicap golfers will hit longer drives than higher handicaps. But less than 1 in 5 drives by Scratch golfers will travel 275+ yards. Accuracy is still king!
