The "Other Pinehurst" Went From Bank Fire Sale to Top 100 Public + "Show The Palm, Slap The Wall, Bomb The Drive"

Plus, Basketball vs. Golf- Which Burns More Calories?

Happy Friday all- it’s going to be a hot and difficult weekend at Pinehurst with temperatures in the low 90s, tight lies abound and fast greens that look like upside down bowls. After the birdie-fest at Valhalla during last month’s PGA Championship, it’s a nice change of pace to see the best players in the world being challenged. HERE are some of the highlights (or maybe lowlights?) from yesterday’s 1st round. We couldn’t find the video but Sahith Theegala actually hit the green with his tee shot on the 230 yard par 3 6th hole, only to follow up his great opportunity by putting it into the bunker. Wow, just wow.

TIPS & DRILLS
”Show the Palm, Slap the Wall, Bomb Your Drive”
Instructor Michael Maggs explains
To Recap…

If you’ve ever taken a lesson, your instructor may have taught you to “hold the tray” with your trail hand when you get to the top of your backswing Michael Maggs says this is a counterintuitive maneuver that is likely causing you to open the club face too much at impact. Instead, he says to “show the palm” to someone standing directly behind you. Here’s what he means:

-STEP 1: Without your club, take your trail hand back and act as if you’re showing someone behind you a tattoo on your palm. Alternatively, think of it as if you’re about to hi-five someone directly behind you.
-STEP 2: Again without a club, practice your downswing, keeping your trail hand flat as if you’re about to “slap the (invisible) wall” perpendicular to your stance.
-STEP 3: Now, grab your club and slowly practice the same motion, maintaining a flat wrist as you take the club back to the top where you “show the palm” and down towards the ball where you “slap the wall.”

PRO TIP- Wrist action at the top of your swing may work for some, but keeping your wrist flat and swing simple will lead to more consistent drives.

The Bull at Pinehurst Farms
Sheboygan Falls, WI

Prior to the pandemic in 2019, The Bull at Pinehurst Farms (unrelated to the one in North Carolina) had fallen on hard times financially. The Bull was temporarily closed, as the club owed it’s primary creditor (the bank) over $4 million. Fortunately for locals and those visiting the nearby Destination Kohler courses at Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits, two Wisconsin investors purchased the course at nearly a 50% discount from the debt owed and vowed to make it “shiny and new” again.

Despite the fact that it was purchased at a discount, it certainly offers a memorable premium experience. Ranked the 88th Best Public Course in the US by Golf Digest last year, it has been applauded for its meticulous upkeep, its challenging layout and its overall value. The only Jack Nicklaus Signature course in the state of Wisconsin, The Bull is often overshadowed by the other nearby Kohler venues. But topping out at $165 during prime tee times, it makes for a fantastic addition to anyone’s Kohler golf plans. Just don’t fool yourself into thinking it will be a nice relaxing warm-up round. With a slope rating of 143, this Bull has horns (sorry, sorry- we couldn’t help ourselves).

Rates: $84 - $165 during peak season

STATISTICS
Stat of the Day: Golf vs. Basketball - Which Burns More Calories?

The Stat: Leisurely Walking 18 holes vs. Stop and Go Sprinting on a Basketball Court for nearly an hour. Which burns more calories? Well, a 48 minute game of basketball burns 450 calories while walking 18 holes burns 1759 calories.

The Takeaway: It’s not a total surprise that golf burns more calories, but the disparity is a bit jarring. You would have to play 192 minutes of basketball in order to burn the same amount of calories as walking 18 holes. Then again, you can’t exactly down a few beers and a hot dog at halftime of a basketball game and sprint right back onto the court. Regardless, this is clear evidence that we all need to play more golf.
