Scottie Gets $8 million WITHOUT playing this weekend + The Fairway Bunker Shot Simplified

Plus, Driver Distance Data Broken Down by Quality of Strike + a Georgia Course with the Elevation Changes of a Ski Slope!

Happy Friday all- it’s hard to believe the Paris Olympics are already wrapping up, but the Women’s competition is still in full swing. USA’s Rose Zhang (-7) and Nelly Korda (-4) are very much in contention behind leader Lydia Ko of New Zealand (-9).

You know who won’t be playing golf this weekend? Scottie Scheffler. And by NOT playing, Scottie will still secure an $8 million payday. How? Well, he boat-raced the rest of the PGA Tour during the regular season and will finish first in total FedEx Cup points, even without taking a swing at this weekend’s Wyndham Championship. That’s 2 regular season trophies in the last 3 years for Scottie, and his worst finish was 2nd to Jon Rahm last year. Truly incredible.

TIPS & DRILLS
The Keys to a Perfect Fairway Bunker Escape 🔑🔑🔑
PGA Golf Equipment Pro, Chris Trott gives you 3 easy steps
To Recap…

Let’s face it- fairway bunker shots are rarely part of your practice routine. So if you find yourself in one, you need to talk yourself through the shot. Chris Trott, gives you the play-by-play to hit it cleanly and get back on track:

-STEP 1: Dig your heels in the sand to establish a firm footing and note how fluffy or dense the sand might be.
-STEP 2: Grip down on your club ~1” or so, and grip the handle tightly! Trott explains that this shortens your arm muscles, which in turn raises your low point just enough to keep the club from digging into the sand behind the ball.
-STEP 3: Unlike a fairway iron shot where you should focus on the back of the ball, focus your eyes on top of the ball to give yourself the best shot at picking the ball cleanly from the sand.

PRO TIP: The main key here is just to get yourself back in play. If there’s a high bunker lip in front of you, you may need to take your medicine and either A. take a higher lofted club that won’t get you anywhere near the hole, or B. play out sideways just to get yourself back in the fairway.

Don’t worry about reaching the green in this situation. Just don’t leave it in the bunker a 2nd time!

COURSES
Is That a Ski Slope or a Fairway?
With views for days, Currahee Club takes full advantage of the mountain terrain

Currahee Club
Toccoa, GA

Nestled high above Lake Hartwell in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Currahee Club is one of the true hidden gems of Georgia. The town of Toccoa, GA sits ~95 miles from the Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, so the course is a bit off the beaten path. But once you reach the gate at Currahee Club, you immediately know you’ve landed in a special place that’s well worth the travel.

Dramatic 150+ foot elevation changes define this monster of a course, which measures 7,513 yards from the back tees and has a slope rating of 150! To put it simply, the course is hard. Misses can take your round from good to bad in a heartbeat. Even still, nearly every review of the course is positive. As one reviewer wrote, “Views on 1, 10 & 17 are breathtaking. Course is in tremendous shape. If you don’t like hills, this will still be worth it. Best course I’ve played top to bottom. One of the most difficult also.” The par three 17th is the signature hole on the course. It measures 178 yards with a forced carry over an old creek-filled quarry, complete with a mini waterfall in view. Even with the downhill elevation change, be sure to take one extra club to ensure you clear the creek… because if you’re short, you’re dead.

The course may be a touch pricey, but you can frequently find great offers on deal sites like GolfNow with a little foresight. With a rare 100% recommendation rate on Golf Pass, Currahee offers exactly what you want in a mountain course- challenging golf with views for days.

Fun fact: From the clubhouse, you can actually see 4 different states on a clear day - North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee & of course, Georgia.

Rates: $107 - $175 during peak season

STATISTICS
Stat of the Day: Driver Distance by Quality of Strike
presented by…

The Stat: Golf Stats Pro, Lou Stagner analyzed 5,477 driver swings from 27 amateurs using a GC quad launch monitor. When making contact with the ball at the bottom of the club face vs in the upper-center, there was an average of a 21 yard difference!

The Takeaway: You know those shots where you instinctively recognize you flushed it as soon as the ball leaves the club? It’s more than likely the ball was hit in the center of the face, or the upper-center to be more specific.

One of the biggest differences between amateurs and pros is the ‘quality of strike.’ If you’ve ever seen photos of the wear pattern on any of Tiger’s clubs from the early 2000s, you’ll immediately appreciate just how incredible those guys are. They maximize their distance because they are so consistent with their strikes. So the next time you’re swinging as hard as you can to pound it 300 yards on the range, back off 10-15% and just try hitting the ball in the center of the club face.
