The Best Drivers of 2024 (Tested & Verified) + Distance Lacking? You've Gotta Fire Those Hips!

Plus, just 6,247 yards, this Sam Snead Major Course in New Jersey Packs a Punch

Happy Tuesday all- we’re squarely in the golf dead season, so fans are thirsty for any golf news they can get. On Saturday, we were all excited to hear reports that the PGA Tour and the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) had finally settled on a preliminary ~$1 billion agreement that would unite LIV Golf with the PGA Tour and reward existing PGA Tour players handsomely for their loyalty. The reports were that the PIF would take an 11% ownership stake in the Tour and get 2 seats on the board of directors, and all that was needed was a final vote by PGA Tour players.

Welp, it’s been 4 days since that report came out, and not a peep has been heard since. We’d love to be wrong here, but we’re not so sure those rumors were true. Can you blame whoever started them though? It’s a pretty slow news cycle in the golf media world this time of year.

In today’s newsletter…

TIPS & DRILLS
For Max Distance, Activate Your Hips to their Fullest Potential
Better Hip Turn = More Power
To Recap…

If you’re someone who gets a bit handsy and relies more on your arms and wrists to generate speed, we can almost assuredly say that you’ll generate more distance off the tee if you can activate your hips properly. The main power source for any long ball hitter lies in their hips and core. To start maxing out your distance, follow these steps:

-DRILL 1: Open up your lead foot a bit. This will allow you to load onto your back leg and turn fully through impact.
-DRILL 2: Place one ball under your front foot toes and a second ball under your back foot heel. This will ingrain the feeling of using your rear toes and your front heel to turn and fire your hips with max speed.
-DRILL 3: Drop your trail foot back and take a swing. If you’re getting a proper hip turn, you should feel a slight pinch up the inside of your lead leg as you swing through.
-DRILL 4: Take a swing and finish with your belt buckle directly over your lead foot and pointing towards your target. No more slapping at the ball with your arms, let your torso do the work.

Practice these 4 drills consistently this Winter and you’ll blow away your weekly foursome with your distance off the tee next Spring.

COURSES
Only 6,247 yards, but boy does it pack a punch

Seaview Golf Club (Bay Course)
Galloway, NJ

New Jersey is a sneaky good state for great golf. The commute to reach a great course might be painful (i.e. NJ ranks dead last in terms of both traffic congestion and total expenses per mile), but with tracks like the Ballyowen at Crystal Springs Resort, Architects Golf Club in Phillipsburg and Twisted Dune near the Jersey Shore, the pain endured will be worth it. And the Bay Course at Seaview Golf Club is absolutely worth the drive; it’s one of the best deals you’ll find anywhere in America.

Located just outside Atlantic City, Seaview Golf Club is part of the the Dolce Resort family (owned by Wyndham Group), with a 300 room hotel and 2 courses on-site. The Pines Course lies more inland, naturally, while the Bay Course plays along the water with incredible views of Atlantic City across Abescon Bay. The Bay Course was designed in 1914 by Hugh Wilson (of Merion fame) and finished by Donald Ross, and it has played host to numerous pro events in its history. It’s where Sam Snead won his first major (the 1942 PGA Championship), and it’s been the host course for the ShopRite LPGA Classic since 2010. It has also hosted 2 presidents (Harding & Eisenhower), as well as numerous celebrities like Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Michael Phelps.

Topping out at just 6,247 yards, the course “is not a test of length; rather, it’s a test of imagination, accuracy, and short game.” GolfPass Managing Editor Jason Scott Deegan (who has reviewed 1,100+ courses across 26 countries) rates Seaview in his top 5 worldwide for courses under 6,500 yards. It’s a links-style layout that features deep bunkers and small, undulating greens. On a calm day, you can actually put up a nice score, but if the wind is blowing, watch out. The 2020 edition of the ShopRite Classic was won by Mel Reid with a score of -19, while the 2013 edition on the same course ended with just 3 players under par due to punishing conditions (won by Karrie Webb -4).

If the views don’t do it for you though, perhaps the price will. Sure, a peak summer weekend tee time can run between $150-$200, but in May or September you can find peak weekend rates < $100. Or you can go the package route and book a stay & play. A quick search shows an early-June weekday 2 nights/2 rounds package of $235 per night, or you can book a weekend for just $311 per night. That’s pretty great bang for your buck at a seaside resort in the northeast, especially one with as much history as Seaview.

Rates: Seaview uses dynamic pricing with rates that fall between $25-$175 dependent upon the season, day of the week & time.

STATISTICS
Stat of the Day: The Best Drivers of 2024 (Tested & Verified)
presented by…

The Stat: The Ping G430 Max 10K driver was the most accurate and forgiving of all 37 driver models tested, while the Callaway Ai Smoke Max D model was the longest off the tee (source: MyGolfSpy).

The Takeaway: Let’s get real for a second here- If you’re playing pretty much any 2024 model from a big name brand, you’re in great shape from a technology standpoint. The difference between any 2 drivers in even the top 15 this year and the top few drivers 5 years ago would show a much bigger gap, but we’re on the cutting edge of technology these days.

You’re basically splitting hairs between any 2024 models, so just pick the driver that matches your budget and looks / feels best to you. Driver choice is pretty subjective these days.
