A Drive-thru Halfway House with a Rooftop Tee Box! + Let's Fix that Chicken Wing

Plus, Comparing Shots from 100 Yards in the Fairway vs. Rough vs. Sand

Happy Friday all- with so many great players leaving for the LIV Golf League in recent years, there hasn’t been the same level of drama we’ve been accustomed to during PGA Tour events. And TV ratings seem to reflect that; they continue to decline year-over-year across some of the Tour’s biggest events. Viewership during the final round of the Tour Championship at East Lake was down 13%, the Players Championship was down 15%, and the Phoenix Open and Arnold Palmer Championship was down 30%! Between Scottie Scheffler’s ho-hum dominance and the lack of bad boy archetypes remaining after all the LIV poaching, there’s just not that much drama anymore. And humans love drama. We love stories of underdogs and stories of heroes triumphing over villains. Here’s to hoping Jay Monahan can pull a rabbit out of his you know what next year.

TIPS & DRILLS
Fix Your Chicken Wing in 2 Steps
Struggle to get full extension at impact?
To Recap…

Do you struggle to get maximum arm extension at impact? Got a flying chicken wing like in the thumbnail photo above? Lucky for you, there’s an easy fix, and the CEO of Golf is here to show it to you.

-STEP 1: Place a headcover under your lead arm. Doing so will ensure that your flying elbow disappears entirely as you maintain connection with your torso and rotate fully through impact.
-STEP 2: When you finish your swing, you should feel like you’re pointing your lead hand thumb backwards (away from your target line). This ensures that you won’t cut your swing off too quickly after impact. Instead, you will use hip rotation to square the club face and complete your swing.

PRO TIP: If you really want to focus on arm-body connection and you can spare a few bucks, go pick up the Patented Tour Striker Training Ball, popularized by Rory McIlroy, Matthew Fitzpatrick and numerous other Tour players.

COURSES
Hit Up the Drive-thru Halfway House, Then Tee Off From the Roof
One of the best public courses in Massachusetts
Shaker Hills Country Club
Harvard, MA

Here at Wild Golf, we love innovation, and Shaker Hills Country Club in Harvard, MA is full of it. Despite the name, it’s actually a public golf course, and a darn good one at that, having previously been ranked as the #1 public venue in Massachusetts. The course was purchased by Fred Curtis, Jr. in 2012, and he’s taken a hands-on approach to improving the experience every year since. The layout is fantastic and conditions are always top-notch, with a 94.4% Recommendation Rating on GolfPass. If you like a course with variety, this is right up your alley. There are a good number of doglegs and a ton of undulation out there, with numerous tee shots offering 50+ feet of elevation change.

On holes #6 and #13 (both par 3s), you can opt to tee off from the roof of the halfway house, which is especially cool considering you may have literally just driven straight through it- WATCH THE VIDEO. Yes that’s right- they have a drive-through halfway house, chef’s kiss 🧑‍🍳. On the par 4 12th hole, you can opt to tee off from the adjacent #3 tee box, which offers less dog leg but requires a higher ball flight to clear the trees. On hole #5, which is a traditional par 5 at 602 yards from the tips, you can opt to play it as a par 6, with an alternative tee box that adds additional yardage. With so many options, each round plays like a choose-your-own-adventure game.

Rates fall between $55-149 dependent upon the time of year and day of the week, and the course has its own app, which offers additional loyalty discounts and credits- every 5th round is free! As one GolfPass reviewer wrote, “Shaker Hills is one of my favorite courses anywhere. I love everything about it. The layout is fantastic and includes lots of elevation changes, dramatic boulders, and stunning views... I hesitated before writing this review because I do not want to drive more traffic to this gem of a course. But they deserve the praise!”

Rates: $119 peak on weekdays, $149 peak on weekends (rates as low as $55 with additional loyalty discounts available)

STATISTICS
Stat of the Day: Impact of Lie at 100 Yards
presented by…

The Stat: When playing from 100 yards across fairway, rough and sand lies, bunker lies cause the most problems, contributing ~0.75 additional shots over a fairway lie. Proximity to the hole is also ~39% farther when playing from sand vs. from the fairway (56.2 feet vs. 40.4 feet).

The Takeaway: There’s more to this story, as this data is averaged across all handicaps. For example, a 2 HCP averages ~44 feet of proximity to the hole when playing from the sand, which is only ~4 feet further than the statistical average across all handicaps from the fairway. Even still, a 2 HCP will take an additional 0.70 shots when playing from the sand (vs. from the fairway), so they’re not terribly far off the average. The sand is challenging for all!

Pro Tip: One of the best ways you can improve your ball striking overall is by practicing your irons out of a bunker just like you would on a range mat (hat tip to Youtuber George Bryan). And the added bonus is that you’ll be far more comfortable should you find yourself in a fairway bunker out on the course.
