Tuesday Quick Tip: 3 Pro Tips for Tour-Level Iron Compression

Plus, in Trivia: What is the highest winning score in a U.S. Open at Oakmont?

Happy Tuesday everyone! It’s U.S. Open week, and things are going to be BRUTAL out there at Oakmont Country Club! It’s not very often that the guys on TV are happy with any round in the 70’s. Admittedly, it’s a bit therapeutic to see the best in the world struggle a bit. In a recent interview, Ben Griffin was asked what score he would be satisfied with at the end of the week, and he said PLUS 4! Here’s Ben showing just how thick the 5” rough will be playing this week.

TIPS & DRILLS
3 Pro Swing Feels To Improve Iron Compression
@davecvetkovicgolf helps us get elite level compression
To Recap…

Anyone can hit at least one decent iron shot per round (well most players, anyway), but achieving Tour-level compression with a crisp divot is an entirely different feeling… some might even say it’s the best feeling in the world (aside from your wedding day, of course - although it is a worthy contender). The difficulty is getting great ball compression consistently. @danecvetkovicgolf shows us how:

-Feeling #1: Trail Elbow - In the backswing, we want to avoid the dreaded “chicken wing”, which is when your trail elbow flails out and points backwards, resembling a chicken wing (often because you pull the club too far to the inside). Make sure your trail arm is more in front of your body on the way back by holding it stable with your lead arm cupped underneath. This will help you stay connected and get the club in a good spot at the top of the swing.
-Feeling #2: Stable Legs - For most golfers, our knees aren’t really a focal point, but they can be a major source of power if used correctly. One of the major faults in knee/leg movement is letting the trail knee collapse in the downswing. To avoid this, get your trail shoulder over your trail knee in the downswing - if your knee collapses, you may miss the ball entirely!
-Feeling #3: Load to Explode - A great way to explode through the ball and increase compression is what Dane refers to as “pulling the cord of a lawnmower” - on the way back, you want to pull the cord up by using your entire body rather than just your arms, and on the way through the ball you pull the cord up on the opposite side to continue using your big muscles through the ball!

PRO TIP: These 3 moves will require a bit of repetition in order to master them, but if you don’t like 1 or 2 of them, that’s perfectly okay. Some players do and some just don’t. Find what feelings work for your swing and learn to lean on them in moments of pressure.
