Tuesday Quick Tip: 5 Things to STOP Doing If You Want to Improve!
Plus, in Trivia: Let the Masters Trivia Begin!
Happy Tuesday! Golf is a funny game - it often seems like the harder we try and the more we push ourselves to improve, the worse we get. We’ve all been there - you’ve had a terrible round, zero putts seem to fall, and on the last hole you say “man, I don’t even care anymore!”… proceeding to hit the shot of your life. Well, there is something to that - managing expectations and not pushing yourself too far are things that will greatly improve your game.
It’s counter-intuitive- to gain control, sometimes you have to give it up. In today’s quick tip, Jon Sherman from Practical Golf brings us 5 things you should STOP doing to ease the tension and have more fun out on the course.
Let’s go!

5 Things You Should STOP Doing If You Want to Improve
@practical.golf tells us how to make golf fun again
To Recap…
There are a lot of things that we SHOULD be doing to shoot lower scores - avoid penalty shots, hit the ball straighter, take fewer putts - blah blah blah, you know the drill. But what about the things that you SHOULDN’T do in order to lower your scores? Here are 5 things you should STOP doing if you want to get better:
-#1: Stop the Marathon Practice Sessions - Spending hours on the range trying to fix your slice will only leave you frustrated and exhausted. Instead, limit your sessions to 30-45 minutes of dedicated practice while your mind is fresh, and know when to walk away when you’re mind starts to wander.
PRO TIP: Go into every practice session with a clear direction and practice plan in mind. Don’t just go blindly beat balls the entire time - the best players start with intention and focus on shoring up a specific weakness in your game.
-#2: Stop Playing Golf Only for Score - If you are a golfer that thinks you should shoot a low number every time you play golf, you might need to find a different game. Everyone is prone to bad days and higher scores than they’d like. Instead, focus on executing each shot in the moment, taking note of what you’ve done well and where you might have room to improve. This is a ‘get 1% better each day’ sort of game. Take the long view.
-#3: Get Rid of Your Impatience - If golf teaches you anything, it’s patience. Forcing shots to happen out on the course because you “need to make more birdies now” is a surefire way to nuke your score. Stay patient throughout your round and the birdies will come.
-#4: Stop Playing Scared - Ever step up on a tight driving hole with water down the left side and out of bounds on the right and start to panic? Well, you’re not alone. However, this mindset of fear is reinforcing the ‘lost ball potential’ in your brain, and it greatly hurts your chances of success. Golf is supposed to be difficult! Gaining an understanding of what constitutes a good vs. bad shot will help you set expectations and realize your outcomes are not that dissimilar from everyone else’s.
-#5: Stop Beating Yourself Up - Golf is a hard game, plain and simple. We are going to get beat up repeatedly by the course, the elements, our own bad tendencies, etc. So don’t pile on and beat yourself up in the process. Be your own biggest fan and pump yourself up - the way you talk to yourself out there is a direct reflection on how you play, we promise!
PRO TIP: What’s one thing that all of these points have in common? Confidence. Believing in yourself is the best way to improve your scores,, and it will GREATLY increase the amount of fun you have on the course. And hey, playing better will also give you a little extra in that Venmo account in money games!
