Tuesday Quick Tip: Compress Your Irons Like the Pros With This Drill

Plus, in Trivia: Who won at Quail Hollow last time the PGA Championship was there?

Happy Tuesday- Hope everyone had a great Easter weekend! (and maybe snuck in a round of golf between all the festivities). This is one of the best times of year to play - the temperatures are IDEAL and grass is starting to grow (shoutout to all the greenskeeper staff members out there, we appreciate you)!

As the grass gets better, however, the “winter rules” excuse no longer applies- no more rolling your ball for a better lie there, compadre. If this fills you with fear, don’t worry- we have an amazing drill to help you compress your irons, regardless of your lie.

Let’s get after it!

TIPS & DRILLS
Compress Your Irons Like the Pros

To Recap…

If we asked you what the absolute best feeling in the world was, you’d probably say one of two things - getting through the line at the DMV in < 1 hour, or hitting a perfectly compressed iron shot directly on line with your target. We don’t have any hidden tips for the first one, buy we do have THE PERFECT drill to help you hit pure irons. All you need is the towel off your bag and an empty bucket (or a head cover, just something soft that won’t break your club if you hit it):

STEP 1: Fold the towel in half and put it slightly more than a club head width behind the ball. This towel will prevent you from leaning back and hitting behind the ball, forcing you to hit down and through - the recipe for a pure iron shot.
STEP 2: Grab an empty bucket (or head cover), put it just outside of the ball and behind it. This prevents you from coming over the top and forces you to come from the inside - another vital key to flushing your irons.
STEP 3: Start slow or try ¾ swings, and hit the ball while missing the towel AND the bucket. You’ll be hitting pure iron shots with penetrating ball flight in no time!

*Note: This drill might be REALLY weird for those that are used to coming in steep and over the top, so start slow and work your way up. It might be weird at first, but trust us - it’ll work!

PRO TIP: Start with a higher lofted club like a PW or 9 iron and work your way up to longer clubs. Swinging from the inside and hitting down on the ball will translate to all of your irons, and you’ll notice a big improvement throughout the bag!
