Tuesday Quick Tip: Create More Width With Just a Golf Towel
Plus, in Trivia: Who's won the most majors at Pebble Beach?
Happy Tuesday all - This past weekend, Rory McIlroy went to one of golf’s most iconic venues and won in dominant fashion, just as we would expect him to! Pebble Beach isn’t the easiest test, especially with those conditions, so what exactly made him dominant? Course strategy played a role (VIDEO HERE), but it’s safe to say that his his average driving distance is what helped set him apart, averaging 335 yards per drive. We all know the importance of the long ball in the modern game, so today we bring you a drill that helps develop more power, with the help of a training aid that’s already in your bag.
Grab your golf towel and come learn how to increase your width with David Leadbetter.
TIPS & DRILLS
Create More Width With Just a Golf Towel
David Leadbetter knows simple tools can sometimes be the most effective
To Recap…
Increasing the width in your backswing is great, but what exactly does that mean? When we talk about ‘width”, we refer to how far extended your arms and club are on the backswing, the downswing, and the follow through. The more width you can create, the more power you can generate. So grab a towel and listen to the legend, David Leadbetter:
STEP 1: Grip one end of the towel with your lead hand “overhand” and with your trail hand “underhand.” Set up in your golf posture as if you’re ready to take a swing.
STEP 2: As you start your backswing, make sure you are pulling the towel tight with your lead hand and your trail hand in opposite directions. The tension you create will allow your arms to stretch fully. And as you are swing down, really test the limits of that tension to the max by pulling the towel.
STEP 3: When taking swings, pause at the top to feel the tension, and stop halfway down on your downswing as well. With your arms extended, this move helps develop more power in the downswing, resulting in longer drives!
PRO TIP: You can also use a club to practice this move, gripping with your lead hand normally and your right hand further down the shaft. Take a swing with your hands separated on the club like this to practice staying long in the backswing, and train yourself to generate power through this width.
