Tuesday Quick Tip: Grant Horvat Teaches Us His 3 Keys When Hitting Driver
Plus, in Trivia: Who has the record for most hole-in-one's on the PGA Tour?
Happy Tuesday all! All the talk in the game today is about hitting the driver farther, because let’s be honest - it’s fun to hit those “hellacious seeds” as Phil Mickelson calls them. What we don’t talk about enough is how to hit bombs while ALSO keeping it out of the trees. Today, Grant Horvat gives us 3 things to think about when hitting the big stick so the houses along the fairway are no longer in danger.
TIPS & DRILLS
Grant Horvat’s 3 Keys to Long, Straight Drives
How to hit bombs AND keep the ball in play
To Recap…
Grant Horvat exploded in popularity on Youtube during Covid- known for his smooth swing and positive attitude, this mild-mannered nice guy is anything but that on the golf course. He effortlessly carries it 290 yards with ball speeds pushing 170 mph, but he’s also super accurate. Here are his keys to long, straight drives:
STEP 1: Make sure your ball position is set in line with your lead heel. This will allow your club to release at the proper time and the face to be square, and also promotes hitting up on the ball since it is more forward in your stance.
STEP 2: Set your spine angle to be tilted away from your target and behind the ball. This will also promote a positive angle of attack (i.e. hitting “up” on the ball), giving you the optimal launch position for a driver. A good way to check spine tilt is to make sure that your lead shoulder is higher than your trail shoulder.
STEP 3: As you take the club back, make sure that you load your weight into your trail side foot (specifically in your heel). Grant says he feels like 70% of his weight is on his back foot. This will promote a full turn behind the ball and allow you to unwind all of your power into and up on the ball, which is the recipe for a STRAIGHT BOMB!
PRO TIP: One of the more important keys to hitting the ball straight is the mental aspect - visualization. Pick out your target and envision your ball flight along the path towards your ideal landing area. As you step into the shot, keep that picture in your head. A committed swing is infinitely more likely to have a positive result!
