Tuesday Quick Tip: How to Thaw Out that Ice Cold Putter
Plus, in Trivia: When was the last time Maxfli balls were in the winners circle?!
Happy Tuesday- here’s an issue we KNOW every person reading this is passionate about - slow play! You know what eliminates slow play? Not inviting that buddy of yours who can’t stand to lose a ball, despite the fact that he spends the majority of his rounds playing from the trees.
You know what else will help with slow play? Eliminating 3-putts! Your rounds will speed up by hitting fewer putts, and you won’t feel so inclined to flag down the cart girl for those extra beers.
Let’s fix 3-putts!

@wickedsmartgolf shows us the 3 things he focuses on to keep his putting sharp
To Recap…
Slow play and 3-putts might top the list for the most frustrating parts of golf. While the cure for a slow foursome is a good Marshall, the cure for 3-putting isn’t quite that simple. Today, @wickedsmartgolf shows us 3 ways to thaw an ice cold putter:
FOCUS #1: Make sure your ball position is good. Most players would benefit from having the ball in the center or just slightly forward in their stance in order to eliminate hitting too far down on the ball. We don’t want a descending blow like you’d have with a wedge. We want the ball to roll off the putter, not skip off the face!
FOCUS #2: Work on your lag putting specifically. Speed control is vital to eliminating 3-putts, so you must work on getting those initial putts closer to the hole. A simple go-to drill is to set an alignment stick ~18 inches behind the hole and hit a lot of 25-40 foot putts, aiming to have the ball finish in between the hole and the stick (or just sink it!).
FOCUS #3: Routine. When you approach every putt with a consistent routine, it removes a TON of variance on the greens. Humans are creatures of habit, so even if it feels silly, go through your full routine on every putt on the practice green. Then when you are on the course, it will feel natural and you won’t even have to think about what you’re doing. You can just tap into your innate feel.
PRO TIP: Next time you watch golf on TV, watch the guys go through their routine. Notice how consistent they are every single time. If routine is important to the pros, it can definitely benefit us amateurs!
