Happy Tuesday! If you struggle with 3-putts, it’s more than likely that your speed control is the key culprit. Even the guys on TV 3-putt their fair share, but they do so at a much lower rate because they actually practice their speed control.. Not everyone is going to be able to pound it 300 yards off the tee, but we all can get better at putting, and perfecting speed control is the quickest way for many amateurs to see lower scores on the course.
Today, we have the perfect drill to see immediate improvement.
Let’s jump in!
TIPS & DRILLS
The Speed Control Drill Where It’s Virtually Impossible Not to See Immediate Results
Lag them close and never 3-putt again!
To Recap…
We don’t need to talk about swing mechanics or attack angles to fix your putting speed. Judging speed on the greens falls under the “feel” category, and all you need is some time and repetition. Here’s a great drill from @brycecopegolf you can use today to see results tomorrow!
-STEP #1: On the practice green, lay a flagstick or an alignment stick down on the green. Roughly 3 feet away from the stick, place two tees in the ground forming a gate that’s 5-6 feet wide.
-STEP #2: With three balls, start at 10 feet away, putting at the gate formed by the tees with the stick laying 3 feet behind the gate.
-STEP #3: With your 1st ball, putt it through the gate and aim to have it stop past the gate without hitting the stick behind it. With your 2nd ball, putt it through the gate and past your 1st ball, stopping before it hits the stick. The goal is to be able to hit every ball through the gate and settle between the stick and the ball that you hit prior to that shot (i.e. the “leapfrog” drill).
-STEP #4: If you successfully complete the drill at 10 feet, move back to 15 feet and then onto 20 feet, and so on.
If you can get all 3 balls to stop beyond the prior ball without hitting the stick at each distance station, you are well on your way to achieving great speed control!
PRO TIP: Improving your feel from longer and longer putting distances has an ancillary benefit- it will also help with your chipping “feel”. In fact, if you’re feeling bold, you can try this same drill as a chipping challenge. Just be sure to give yourself more than just 3 feet of distance to work with!
