Tuesday Quick Tip: Let's Get Rid of that Stanky Leg (for More Power & Consistency)

Happy Tuesday! In case you didn’t watch any golf this past weekend, we’ll sum it up for you - Innisbrook Copperhead Course brought out some temper tantrums! Between Adam Hadwin hilariously busting a sprinkler with his wedge after a poor chip, to Justin Lower snapping his club in half, to Jordan Spieth letting out a loud “F-bomb” and Sahith Theegala violently tossing a club, it was must-see-tv in the worst way possible.

We know bad ball striking is frustrating, and we have all had some eyebrow-raising reactions after a poor shot. Well lucky for you, today’s drill will greatly improve your consistency by eliminating one of the most common swing issues - early extension. Staying in posture is a great way to eliminate bad shots, and this drill does just that.

The way that your legs move as you deliver the club to the ball will have a massive influence on both power and consistency. The number one mistake that most amateurs make is allowing their trail knee to collapse, crowding the area between the torso and the ball and resulting in early-extension - long story short, it creates a big mess! This drill helps keep that trail knee back where it should be, giving you plenty of room for the club to come through the hitting zone:

-STEP 1: Grab a wedge from your bag (we recommend a PW)
-STEP 2: Put the face of the club under your trail heel with the shaft pointing behind and away from you. Address the ball while standing on the face of the club so the shaft is pointing up and away from you.
-STEP 3: Take a swing as normal and try to keep the club from falling down until after impact. Training this feeling will force your trail knee to stay back and keep you in posture, and before you know it you’ll be striping it!

PRO TIP: This drill can be taken to the course and done between shots to ingrain the proper motion just before hitting your ball - just grab a wedge, put it under your trail heel, and take a few practice swings. If you do this, however, don’t slow down play! Nobody wants that guy in their group doing drills and holding everyone up!
