Tuesday Quick Tip: Make More Hard Breaking Putts with This Speed Control Drill

Plus, in Trivia: Who carries 2 putters - one for throwing and one for putting?!

Happy Tuesday! Let’s start with the obvious- putting is hard. Like, really hard. One day everything seems like it’s going in, and the next day the hole feels like it’s the size of a thimble. And if you have a putt that breaks more than a few inches, well good luck.

To get really good at holing the hard-turning putts that have 12+ inches of break, you need to dial in your speed control. Today we have a great drill that does just that.

Let’s go!

Make More Hard Breakers with Better Speed Control

To Recap…

There are a ton of factors at play on the greens, but putting largely boils down to 2 things- line and speed. When the two match up and you hole an 8 footer with 18 inches of break, it’s the best feeling in the world. When they don’t match up… well, that’s usually when the explicit language comes out. To generate better “feel” for the big breakers, grab your putter, a chalk marker, and a few golf balls:

-STEP 1: Pick a hard breaking putt on the practice green that ideally turns 12+ inches either left to right or vice versa, whichever one you want to work on.
-STEP 2: Using a chalk marker, mark a spot on the green perhaps 6-7 feet from the hole as your starting point.
-STEP 3: Draw a straight line through the dot along your AIMING LINE for the putt, roughly 1.5 feet on each side of the dot (creating a straight 3 foot line). Because this is your start line for the putt, it will be aimed outside of the hole to accommodate the break
-STEP 4: Hit putts from anywhere along the line and try to hole as many as you can. The longer the putt, the harder you’ll naturally need to hit it to keep it on line.

PRO TIP: Test multiple kinds of breaks- uphill vs. downhill, big vs. small breaks, left-to-right vs. right-to-left, etc. to really develop a good “feel” for matching up line and speed on putts. If you do this 2x a week for even just 15 minutes, we promise you’ll see more putts drop on the course, much to the dismay of your weekly foursome.
