Tuesday Quick Tip: Never Miss a Short Putt Again!
Plus, in Trivia: Who holds the record on Tour for the most feet of putts made in a single event?!
Happy Tuesday! Golf is a crazy game - a 350 yard drive counts the exact same as a 3 foot putt on the scorecard! While we can’t teach you to hit it 350 yards, today we can help you clean up those 3 footers.
Let’s jump right in!
TIPS & DRILLS
Never Miss a Short Putt Again
@cmccormickgolf gives us a visual aid to help us start putts on line
To Recap…
Missing a short putt has to be one of the most maddening (and sometimes embarrassing) things in golf. Nothing is worse than hitting a great lag putt to a few feet, only to fail cleaning it up because you can’t get it started on line! Cameron McCormick, swing coach for Jordan Spieth, gives us a great visual aid to practice returning the putter face squarely at impact every time:
STEP 1: Find a wall in your house that comes to a corner, like the end of the hallway or the edge of a door. You just need a straight flat edge that you can rest your putter on.
STEP 2: Set your putter so the face is flush against the wall and give yourself room to make a backstroke.
STEP 3: Take a backswing and return the putter head to the wall. If the face hits the wall squarely, you hit a straight putt. If not, you’ll immediately be able to tell if your face is open or closed at impact.
PRO TIP: Confidence is perhaps equally important on short putts as having a square face. If you hit the ball tentatively, even with a square club face, you could come up short or not allow the putt to take the break. The only way you get confidence is through practice and repetition, so don’t shy away from even just 5-10 minutes hitting putts inside 5 feet during your practice sessions.
