To Recap…
It may often feel like there is an overwhelming number of things you can fix in your game, but the simple approach is often the easiest to adopt. After all, if Rory is doing it, shouldn’t we do it too?
Here are 4 keys to Rory’s game that keep his game elite:
#1 - DIAL IN YOUR SPEED: When it comes to putting, mastering speed control is far more beneficial than start line, stroke, etc. Better speed helps you make more mid-range putts and helps you avoid those costly 3-putts from longer distances.
#2 - STEADY TEE TEMPO: It’s easy to say “swing smooth with the driver”, but nobody in this world can resist the urge to swing as hard as humanly possible on the off-chance you might connect with one. But keeping the ball in play is a must. Don’t always go for your personal longest drive - smooth tempo will equate to more balls in play and better club face strikes, and center strikes always go farther than balls off the heel or toe.
#3 - DON’T BE A HERO: When you get into trouble (because it happens to EVERYONE), the first priority should always be to get back to safety as quickly as possible. Never follow up a bad shot with a worse one simply to try and save par in heroic fashion. Trying the hero shot is fun, but taking your medicine and punching back out to safety is most often the best thing for your scorecard.
#4 - PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT: You can’t expect to just show up to the course and magically have your best round. Actively identifying your weaknesses and getting just a little better each day, intermixed with simulated pressure situations, is the only magic bullet.
PRO TIP: One of the most important facets of improvement has little to do with your swing - honesty. Being candid with yourself about your weaknesses is the best way to improve and can help you make major strides in your game. Don’t hide behind your weaknesses - own up to them!
