Tuesday Quick Tip: Rory McIlroy's Go-To Drills for the Perfect Takeaway
Plus, in Trivia: which President had a tree named after him at Augusta National?
Happy Tuesday all - The Sony Open last week was jam-packed with excitement, including a rookie (Taylor Dickson) making his first cut in dramatic fashion by draining not one, but TWO 20 footers on the last two holes to make it on the number! And Nick Taylor holed out from off the 18th green to get into a playoff and ultimately edge out Nico Echavarria for an incredible win.
New achievements in golf can feel daunting, but when you’ve put in the hard work, man do they feel great. Whether it’s placing in a local tournament event, breaking 90 / 80 / 70 for the first time, or making it an entire round without using a single curse word (this one is tough, we know). What were you most proud of in 2024?

TIPS & DRILLS
Want a Perfect Takeaway? Here’s How Rory Does It
Two drills to get your hands moving in the right direction
To Recap…
We all know that Rory Mcilroy has the “Mona Lisa” of golf swings - it’s an absolute work of art. If you’re wondering to yourself “How can I get people to compare MY swing to a famous painting?” then look no further. Here are two drills from Rory himself that help get your hands in the optimal position right from the start:
NOTE: These drills are a LOT easier to do with a short iron or wedge. We’d recommend starting here and progressing through your bag once you are comfortable.
DRILL #1: Take the club back until your rear arm is parallel to the ground and stop here. At this point, make sure the club points directly up, forming a 90 degree angle with your arm, i.e. an “L” shape. Then begin your downswing and hit little half shots, controlling the club face throughout your swing. This move will actively engage your wrists in the backswing such that you’re hinging in the right places.
DRILL #2: Set up to the golf ball as you normally would. Take the club away and stop the club about two feet away from the ball, right at the beginning of your takeaway. Pause for a moment to make sure that your hands and club are in a good position (with your club face angle matching your spine angle), and then make the rest of your full swing from there. The “pause” gives you a second to make any adjustments and solidify a proper takeaway.
PRO TIP: Not only is “pausing” in your takeaway great for identifying any incorrect movements, but it also makes you look cooler when you do this in front of your friends! Pull this move out and everyone will know you’ve been practicing, ensuring instant intimidation. Let the mind games begin!
