Tuesday Quick Tip: Sir Nick Faldo Shows Us (and Rory) the 100 Yard Wedge Shot
Plus, in Trivia: When was Rory's last major victory?
Happy Tuesday- Holy cow what a weekend of golf! In case you live under a rock, Rory McIlroy finally closed out his first Masters Tournament and completed the Career Grand Slam - a feat that only 5 other players have done in golf history. The roller coaster of emotions Rory put us all through was nothing short of exhausting. He seemed to have the Green Jacket in the bag until his 3rd shot into the par-5 13th hole - a fairly straightforward wedge shot that couldn’t have been in a better spot… which he promptly dunked into Rae’s Creek!
Don’t worry Rory, in today’s Tuesday Quick Tip, we have the perfect 100 yard wedge advice to prevent another water ball on 13 next year. And what better person to learn from than 3-time Masters Champion, Sir Nick Faldo!
Let’s dive in! (pun intended… sorry Rory)
TIPS & DRILLS
100 Yard Swing Wedge Swing Thoughts from Sir Nick
Faldo teaches us how he hit wedges in dominant fashion
To Recap…
Just about every golfer knows Sir Nick Faldo, and for great reason. In his time on tour, he led the field in just about every statistical category, but nothing set him apart more than his wedge play. In this video, Faldo shows us a few things that he feels in his wedge swing that will set any player up for success:
-FEEL #1: For a stock wedge, the range of motion that you want to feel most is from chest high to chest high. To feel this prior to address, set your club down and simply stick your arms straight out - your trail arm sticking away from your target and your lead arm towards your target. As you take the club back, put your trail hand in that same extended position, and return to the same lead hand position as you complete your swing. This will shorten your wedge swing and help keep you in rhythm, leading to much better control.
-FEEL #2: Weight transfer is one of the most important fundamentals in any swing, but especially in wedges. Rocking your weight back on your trail side in the backswing and then transferring it forward will ensure consistent and powerful contact through the ball. Feel your weight go into your inside trail heel on the way back, and on the way through get it to your lead foot for consistent wedge shots!
-FEEL #3: “Holding your angle” through the shot is something Faldo teaches here that will GREATLY increase your consistency in distance control, club face control, and quality of strike. What he means by “holding your angle” is hinging your wrists on the backswing, and cutting off your swing just after impact to keep the club face as stable as possible (without wrist turn), rotating your body through instead.
***Feel #3 only works if your body is rotating properly, so make sure you are fully rotating through!
PRO TIP: With wedges, you should NEVER be swinging 100% to max out the distance with each club. All wedge swings should be chest high to chest high, and if you need to hit it further - club up!
