Tuesday Quick Tip: Struggle to Compress Your Irons? Try This Drill from Jordan Spieth's Coach
Plus, in Trivia: Who hit a crazy "no divot" chip shot on the green at Pebble Beach to win his first major?
Happy Tuesday! Ever wonder why the guys on TV take those giant divots the size of dollar bills with their irons? Or do you ever wonder how they frequently hit their 7-irons 200+ yards? Well these two points are related, and with the simple drill below, we’ll have you compressing those irons and taking those beaver pelts out of the fairways in no time - just make sure you replace those strip steaks when you do! Take care of your golf course and it’ll take care of you 😉.
Let’s get into it!
TIPS & DRILLS
Hammer the Tee to Compress Your Irons
@cmccormickgolf shows us a simple way to think about iron shots
To Recap…
Most players struggle with consistent strikes with their irons - sometimes they hit shots that are so fat the divot flies further than the ball, or they line up for a 150 yard shot and blade it 200+ yards. Not only does striking down on your irons fix these misses, but believe it or not, it will also add distance to your shots as well. Here is an easy drill that Cameron McCormick (coach to Jordan Spieth) uses to illustrate the proper way to compress your irons:
-STEP 1: Stick a tee in the ground at a 45 degree angle pointing backwards, then set a ball directly behind the tee - almost as if the ball is teed up at a 45 degree angle as pictured above.
-STEP 2: Picture your club as a hammer, with the head of the hammer being the face of the club and the tee in the ground as a nail.
-STEP 3: With half swings to start, hit down on the ball as if you’re trying to hammer the tee on the opposite side deeper into the ground. Slowly graduate to 3/4 swings and ultimately to full swings and you’ll see that tour level compression in no time!
PRO TIP: If you want to add another level of difficulty to this drill, set a towel flat on the ground 1.5-2.0 inches behind the ball. Your goal here is to miss the towel and still hammer the nail, and you can only miss the towel if you are swinging down into the ball without coming in too shallow.
