Tuesday Quick Tip: Tom Watson's Hack to Find the Perfect Grip Pressure
Plus, in Trivia: Who guaranteed they had a tip that could take 5 strokes off any players game?
Happy Tuesday- Golf is well, a challenging and never-ending journey. Even if you’re a decent player, there are always technical things you can work on, and your grip is the single most important thing you can perfect in your golf swing. It sets the foundation for every little micro-movement you make from that point forward. Today, 8-time major winner Tom Watson shares his secret hack to perfect your grip pressure.
Let’s dive in!
TIPS & DRILLS
Finally, the Perfect Grip Pressure Hack
Tom Watson shows us the trick
To Recap…
Grip pressure is vital to success, and yet, very few players know quite how to hold the club. Fortunately for us, Tom Watson has a simple trick to find the optimal pressure. This is perhaps the best explanation of grip pressure we’ve come across so listen up!
-FIRST: Take your grip and put the club vertical in the air such that the head sits above your head.
-SECOND: Let the club drop in your hands. Feel how the weight falls.
-THIRD: Put the club back into your hands and raise it vertically again. Find the pressure point just before it drops.
-LAST: Slowly let the club fall forward to horizontal as you bend at the waist to take your golf stance. You’ll feel some additional pressure in the last 3 fingers of your lead hand and in the middle 2 fingers of your trail hand. THIS is the perfect grip pressure!
PRO TIP: Many people think a firmer grip will result in added distance but it actually has the opposite effect. Not only does it limit the spring/whip-like effect of having a less tension in your swing, a firm grip also prevents you from allowing the club to shallow and drop to the inside on your downswing. A firm grip might be the cause of your over-the-top slice or pull hook, so next time you’re on the range, give Tom Watson’s grip hack a try!
