Tuesday Quick Tip: Wind Up for Maximum Power & Distance!
Plus, in Trivia: Who holds the record for longest driving average for an entire PGA Tour season?
Happy Tuesday- if a magic golf genie came to you with 3 wishes to help your golf game, what would they be? Separate of getting the cart girl’s number, one inevitable request would have to be to hit the ball 330 yards off the tee, right?! With today’s tip, we can’t guarantee that it will help you cross the 300 yard mark, but it will definitely give you more distance.
Let’s get after it!
TIPS & DRILLS
Lack of Power? You’re Probably Not Turning Enough
@blackburngolf shows us what to do to maximize distance
To Recap…
The #1 reason that you lack power off the tee, according to Golf Digest #1 coach Mark Blackburn, is due to your lack of turn in your backswing. Getting a deeper turn will give you effortless power, because as he mentions - “we can only unload what we load up.” Watch the video and follow these steps:
STEP #1: Set up with your feet a bit wider apart and your spine tilted away from your target.
STEP #2: Turn to the top of your backswing, feeling that your chest is turned entirely away from the target. Feel the coil in your rib cage. It might feel unnatural, but a full turn at the top will give you something to unload and swing with power.
STEP #3: Leading first with your lower body, release the power that you have built up. Important to note: don’t just lunge forward with your upper body… you need the proper sequence, starting with your lower body and allowing your upper body to whip through impact.
PRO TIP: You don’t need a ball in front of you to practice a full turn. Lay an alignment stick or a club across your shoulders and get into golf posture. From here, try to turn such that the stick is at least perpendicular to the target line (90 degrees or more). To increase range of motion, do this drill turning both directions, as if you’re a righty and a lefty.
