Happy Tuesday all- course architects aren’t stupid. They know that certain hole layouts are going to prove easier than others, and bunkers can act as strategic tools to add difficulty, especially on par 5s with a go/no-go decisions. If you find yourself in a bunker 50-60 yards out, have no fear. You just need to get the proper set-up, and that’s exactly what we have for you today.
Let’s do it!
SHORT GAME
The 50-60 Yard Bunker Shot Is All About the Proper Set-up
Popular online instructor Bryce Cope demonstrates
No one EXPECTS to be able to hit the 50-60 yard bunker shot inside 10 feet, but with the help of @brycecopegolf, you’ll have a fighting chance. And we can certainly prevent the blow-up hole that ruins your scorecard:
-STEP 1: Do NOT grab your highest lofted club (i.e. 58-60* lob wedge) as it will require absolutely perfect low-point control with the sand. Instead, assess the lie first. If the sand is more firm, grab a gap or sand wedge. If the sand is softer, grab a pitching wedge or even a 9-iron.
-STEP 2: Pick out a spot ~1.5 inches behind the ball. The key to repeat to yourself here is that you do NOT have to be perfect.
-STEP 3: Treat the shot like a normal bunker shot. Open the face just slightly with the ball toward the front of your stance and your weight on your lead leg.
-STEP 4: Keep your speed up throughout the shot and try to hit a ~100 yard shot. The impact with the sand will slow the club down and help you hit the ball the proper distance.
PRO TIP: Adjust your expectations. The goal here is NOT to get it close. You simply want to avoid outcomes that lead to double bogeys or worse. If you happen to get it on the green and give yourself a putt for an up-and-down, that’s a bonus. Just limit the potential damage.
