Happy Tuesday- we’ve finally reached Ryder Cup week, and the weather is looking ideal for early Fall in New York. There’s rain in the forecast the next few days (which should soften the course), but once the action kicks off Friday morning, it should be sunny and mid-upper 70s the entire weekend, making for optimal scoring opportunities. Look for a lot of darts to be thrown.
Of course, the Pros always play in nearly perfect course conditions, but if you aren’t quite so lucky and happen to find yourself in rock-hard bunker with no sand, we’ve got the prescription for a perfect escape. ↓↓↓
Let’s go!
BUNKER SHOTS
Yes, It’s Possible to Get Height and Spin from Hardpan Bunker Lies
@coach_bauman has the play by play
There are only a select few players out there that prefer to be in a bunker if they happen to miss the green. Even still, I’ve never come across anyone that loves a hardpan bunker lie. If you find yourself on a beach that resembles a cement parking lot, here’s the set-up:
-STEP 1: Take your set-up a lot closer to the ball to allow the toe of the club to do the bulk of the work (and prevent the heel from digging).
-STEP 2: Choke down on the club quite a bit, perhaps all the way to the bottom of the grip where it meets the shaft.
-STEP 3: Put your weight way forward on your lead foot and narrow your stance to promote a much steeper angle of attack.
-STEP 4: Make sure you have a “cut” swing as you approach impact, swinging out-to-in.
PRO TIP: Assuming your within a reasonable distance from the hole, you can use your typical sand or lob wedge for this shot. But if you do not have a high bunker lip to clear and need the ball to travel a bit further to reach the hole, don’t be afraid to drop down to a gap or even pitching wedge.
