Happy Tuesday- one of the most incredible things about Tour Pros is how so many of them seemingly swing effortlessly while generating incredible power and ball compression. Yet when amateurs step into a shot, most of them can only think about maxing out their distance 100%. So what’s the appropriate swing effort percentage to target? We might just have an answer for you below if you’re craving more consistency ↓↓↓

Let’s do it!

APPROACH SHOTS
If You Crave Consistency, Swing Easier (~80%)
The numbers back it up

The @birdogey social media account is one of the better follows out there, mostly for entertainment purposes. But this one caught me off-guard… because the advice is as sound as you’ll come across. He asked a number of plus handicap golfers how hard they swing and the general consensus was somewhere around 80%. And when he tested it himself, he was able to dial in his distance significantly, taking what was a 15 yard gap between his shortest and longest iron shots and cutting it down to just 2 yards. Here’s the logic:

-FIRST: When you swing easier, you hit the center of the club face more consistently. Far fewer heel and toe strikes.
-SECOND: When you swing easier, the club face is more square at impact. Long left pulls and short right pushes diminish significantly.
-THIRD: When you swing easier, your body is able to sync up with your arms more consistently (and combat early extension).
-LAST: When you swing easier, it’s much easier to play your natural stock shot shape repeatedly.

PRO TIP: Note we never said to swing “softly.” You simply need to swing easier. When you’re swinging out of your shoes, all sorts of bad things can happen, namely a club face that is un-square. So give this a shot the next time your on the range.
