Happy Tuesday- welp, the Ryder Cup is over and we’re nearing the off-season for many pro and amateur golfers. And what do we do in the off-season? We shore up our weaknesses. If your performance this year didn’t go as well as planned and your chipping game is to blame, the drill below could be of great use. Let’s perfect the “Dead Hand Wedge” with he help of Jason Day ↓↓↓
Let’s do it!
SHORT GAME
Perfecting the ‘Dead Hand Wedge’ - Is This the Easiest Way to Chip?
Jason Day demonstrates and shows exactly what NOT to do
The “Dead Hand Wedge” chipping technique aims to remove excessive wrist action, resulting in more consistent strikes. By taking your hands out of the equation as much as possible, it forces your big muscles (upper body) to do the bulk of the work, using torso rotation as well as different clubs to result in different distances and heights. But listen to Jason Day’s advice, and don’t fall into the trap of pulling the club head to the inside. Here’s how:
-STEP 1: Lay down 2 alignment sticks (or clubs) in parallel ~1 foot apart, with the ball placed between them just a couple inches from the outer stick.
-STEP 2: Grab a towel and place it under your arms across the front of your chest.
-STEP 3: Practice your chipping motion, aiming to keep the club head between the 2 sticks and your hands inside the interior stick. Don’t pull the club head to the inside!
-STEP 4: Once you’ve rehearsed the motion, hit a few dozen chips with the towel and alignment sticks. Start to ingrain the feeling so you can take it to the course without even thinking.
PRO TIP: This is a great drill to practice regularly, so put it in the weekly or monthly rotation. It’s so easy for you to start using more and more wrist action with the goal of generating spin or height, so by re-visiting this drill every now and again, it will get you arms and body back in sync, preventing those chili-dips and skulls.
