Happy Tuesday all- here’s a scenario for you... You’re on the 18th hole and you’re down 1 to your opponent. He has a 3 footer for bogey, giving you an opening if you can get up and down for par. Unfortunately, you are short-sided with a bunker between you and a tight pin on the other side. You MUST give yourself a putt to have a fighting chance. Do you aim for the fat part of the green and hope you can make a 30 footer or do you go for the hero flop shot for a chance at a putt inside 5 feet?

For all you heroes, we’ve got you covered with today’s tip.

Let’s learn the art of the flop - who knew it could be simple?!!

SHORT GAME
The LAST Flop Shot Lesson You’ll Ever Need
It Doesn’t Have to Be So Hard

For everyone that opted for the glorious flop shot in the scenario above, we’ve got you. Watch @jerome.rufin get schooled by 2-time PGA Tour winner (Gabriel Hjertstedt) (@gabegolf_):

-STEP 1: Grab the club with ONLY your trail hand.
-STEP 2: Take a long back swing such that your hand reaches shoulder height.
-STEP 3: Swing smoothly through impact and focus on getting your trail thumb to your lead collarbone, rolling your trail foot over in the process.
-STEP 4: Practice this motion while hitting a few practice shots until the feeling is comfortable and ingrained in your mind.
-STEP 5: Now place your lead hand back on the club, but use it only as an extra guide, still focusing on your trail hand as the dominant hand on the grip. Hit the shot and it should come out high and soft.

PRO TIP: Once you’ve practiced this shot a handful of times, you’ll be tempted to take it to the course and use it across a variety of situations. DON’T FALL INTO THIS TRAP! Assuming your goal is low scores (and not just to hit as many hero shots as possible), in every situation you must ask yourself, “What is the least risky, most efficient shot you can hit to achieve your desired end result?” Very rarely is the flop shot the only answer, so keep that in mind!
