Futuristic Golf Carts in Scottsdale: Pedal Bikes, Landboards, Scooters, Segways & 4-Wheelers + Fix These 3 Putting Mistakes

Plus, Is Putting in the Afternoon Truly More Difficult?

Happy Tuesday all- prepare to have your mind blown this week when you see highlights of the Black Desert Championship, held at Black Desert Resort in St. George, Utah. The event is part of the PGA Tour’s Fall Series, and the course is simply stunning. The contrast of the black volcanic rock against the lush green grass with blue skies and red mountains in the distance makes for a visual explosion of color - see HERE. Patrick Manning is the visionary businessman who brought the course to life, and when the course was finished, he knew he had something special on his hands. It was so special that he decided to boldly (naively) call the PGA & LPGA Tour headquarters to see if they might be interested in hosting an event there. That’s how it works, right? You just call them up and they give you a tournament? Well, it may have taken some persistence, but believe it or not, that’s pretty much how Manning was able to bring the first event to Utah in 60 years. Well done Patrick, well done.

TIPS & DRILLS
Are You Making These 3 Common Putting Mistakes?
Eliminate these issues and you will see lower scores
To Recap…

If you want to lower your scores ASAP, spending more time on the putting green is likely the quickest way to do so. And if you can fix and of the 3 common mistakes outlined in the video above, you will undoubtedly shave a few strokes off your handicap. Here are the issues, as outlined by coach Erik Coover:

MISTAKE #1: You set-up too far away or too close to the ball. Ideally, your eyes should be directly over or just slightly inside the ball. You can test this by dropping a ball from directly below your eye and seeing where it lands.

MISTAKE #2: You pick your head up and start following the ball through impact. If you like to watch the ball as it comes off the putter face and tracks towards the hole, your club face position at impact will undoubtedly be less square. Keep your head dead-still and only follow the ball with your eyes after your putting stroke is totally complete.

MISTAKE #3: You use your hands or wrists too much during the stroke. Ideally, your hands should be “locked in place,” and the only moving part of your body should be your shoulders rocking back and forth. One way to lock your hands in place is to slightly ulnar deviate your lead wrist, as Erik demonstrates.

One of the primary goals with putting is consistency- if you can eliminate as many variables as possible in the putting stroke, you’ll see much stronger results. And you’ll also be able to pinpoint your weaknesses and where to focus your practice.

A Whole New World of Golf Carts: Pedal Bikes, Landboards, Scooters, Segways & 4-Wheelers
This Scottsdale Resort is ahead of its time
The Westin Kierland Golf Club
Scottsdale, AZ

As we get closer to Fall and temperatures drop across the country, we’re approaching prime golf season in the southwest. If you live in a colder climate and crave warmer temperatures, the Westin Kierland Resort is one of the best vacation venues out there. It has a waterpark with a lazy river, world class dining, and a luxurious spa, and the Westin Kierland Golf Club offers a one-of-a-kind experience that feels almost futuristic. Specifically, the fleet of unique cart vehicles offered by Kierland makes it seem like you’re playing golf on a different planet. With landboards, pedal bikes, segways, scooters and 4-wheelers (a.k.a. “TurfRiders”) to choose from, a round at Kierland is just more fun than a round riding in a traditional golf cart.

Now some might say this is a gimmick, a marketing tactic designed to bring more travelers to the resort and jack up rates. And you’d absolutely be justified in saying that. It is a resort, after all. But the modern carts don’t just look cool, they actually have an added benefit- quicker rounds. Nancy Dickens, the Director of Golf at Kierland has publicly stated the fleet of modern vehicles they’ve brought in has sped up play for those that use them. Since they are all designed for individual riders, everyone can go directly to their ball without having to wait on their playing partners. And some of the vehicles can go as fast as 24 MPH!

Kierland offers three different 9-hole courses at the resort- Acacia, Ironwood and Mesquite. All 3 are friendly layouts with top-notch conditioning and unmatched views. Seriously, the scenery at the resort will leave you in awe and the post-round beverage hits different with views of the Phoenix Mountains in the distance. So if you’re looking for a great golf getaway with warmer temperatures this Fall/Winter, keep the Westin Kierland Resort on the shortlist. Who knows, maybe they’ll have mini-Cyber trucks by the time you arrive!

Rates: $109-$227 with discounted rates available on tee time sites (and no extra cost to test out one of their non-traditional carts)

STATISTICS
Stat of the Day: Putting Make Rate by Distance & Time of Day
presented by…

The Stat: Based on Tour Player data tracked from 2004-2021, there was a minimum decrease of 1.7% in terms of make rate at each distance when putting between 8-9am and putting between 4-5pm (on putts between 3-8.5 feet)
***source: @LouStagnerGolf

The Takeaway: We’ve all heard the excuses- “my ball went offline due to a spike mark” or “it’s just harder to make putts later in the day.” Well now we have definitive proof. Earlier in the day, the greens have been freshly cut and rolled, and the putting surfaces are as true as they’ll ever be. Between foot traffic and grass growth, however, putts lose their line more frequently later in the day.

So if you want to lower your handicap, maybe those 6am dew sweeper tee times really are preferred…?
